New Delhi, April 19

A new legislation to cater to the current requirements of trade and transport by road was cleared by the Union Cabinet on Thursday. The Carriage by Road Bill, 2005, with certain amendments, will be introduced in the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament. It will repeal the existing Carriers Act, 1865, an official spokesperson told reporters after the Cabinet meeting. The Bill envisages a Central registration unit for all commercial vehicles and imposing deterring penalty on common carrier for violation of provisions of the Act.
