`Research labs face acute shortage of scientists'

Bangalore June 18 India needs to go beyond valuing managers and monetary success, and laud researchers for technical achievements, urged Dr C. Mohan, Chief Scientist, IBM India, speaking at India Innovation Summit organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in the city recently.

"Techies need to remain focused and continue in the same stream," he said. The $90-billion firm has around 3,000 researchers across eight labs and has established a technical career ladder so researchers have the same executive positions as their management counterparts.

Shortage

He said the IBM India Research Lab and similar labs by other companies were facing a severe lack of scientists.

Cisco has sprouted a new business unit called Global Products. "We will be creating products for global markets from India with this model of internal ventures. The division will be free of the company's internal problems and yet can leverage its architectural strengths," said Mr Rangu Salgame, President - Global Products, Cisco.
