Indian IT vendors may line up more global telecom deals

V. Rishi Kumar

Hyderabad, June 28

As large number of telecom outsourcing deals come up for renewal, a good chunk of them in the Asia Pacific region, Indian vendors such as Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Wipro and Tech Mahindra are poised to garner a good number of them.

Typically, these vendors would also take to the partnership approach that would broaden the scope of engagement, including providing consultancy for business transformation, offering value-added services and extending maintenance and operations support.

The Principal Analyst, Gartner, Mr Kamlesh Bhatia, said these vendors are likely to slice up a share of the global market for telecom change and process management and business transformation. This has also grown significantly as mergers and acquisitions have meant a lot of integration of services.

Speaking to Business Line, Mr Bhatia said that as of 2005, top 10 Indian vendors had accounted for about $1.7 billion from telecom services and that meant a growth of over 30 per cent over previous year and the sector is witness to a much-accelerated growth.

Referring to IBM-Bharti deal, Mr Bhatia said this was one of a kind deal that many leading carriers were seeking to emulate. However, in the case of large deals that get broken up for several vendors, Indian IT vendors are well poised to scale up their presence.

Citing the case of Tech Mahindra deal for BT, TCS deal for Saudi Telecom, Wipro venture with Motorola, Patni deal with Disney Mobile and The Carphone Warehouse, he said these are just examples of shape of things to come.

IT transformation

Typically, IT transformation is also driven by the need to get lot more nimble in the market place alongside mergers and acquisitions accelerating the pace of development. This meant that Indian vendors would either partner some leading consultancy service companies or they may also leverage their own resources to offer these services.
