Chennai, July 6 “Where are the teachers?,” asks Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, responding to the IT industry’s suggestions to start institutes to coach students to make them more employable.

At the Nasscom HR summit, Prof Jhunjhunwala said it was fundamental to make teaching a lucrative option before trying to train teachers in industry-specific courses.

Higher pay

“Industry must spend a certain amount of money on academia. Unless teachers are paid three times their existing salaries, we are not going to be able to create a new a pool of teachers,” he said, addressing a session on ‘Innovative models for enhancing the industry ready talent pool.’

“We must understand that the teacher talent pool is even more limited than the student talent pool. The industry must use existing teachers more efficiently to impart training to students,” he said.

Knowledge transfer

Mr Mukul Agrawal, Managing Director, Unisys Global Services and Country Manager, Unisys India, suggested a formal knowledge transfer between tier-I, tier-II and tier-III cities by rotating teachers and industry professionals to work in colleges in these cities. To help maintain the teacher talent pool, he said industry could get into a non-poaching agreement with institutes while training teachers. Earlier in the session, Prof. Jhunjhunwala had said about 90 per cent of teachers undergoing industry training left the teaching profession to join the industry.
