Infrastructure Government - Policy
Our Bureau New Delhi, July 12 After being referred for clarifications several times, the Board of Approval (BoA) for Special Economic Zones on Thursday gave conditional nod to Mr Mukesh Ambani’s Navi Mumbai SEZ in Dronagiri, for a multi-product zone spread over 1,250 hectares. Highly placed sources in the Government told Business Line here that this means “they can establish unit in the zone after completing contiguity works like over-bridge etc”. The sources, however, added that this type of conditional nod holds good for all proposals wherever associated works concerning the proposed zones are incomplete or not being undertaken. The sources said that the Maharashtra Government was asked to give its views on the report of the Revenue Department, which touched upon issues that encompassed the rights of the villagers in the area affected by the Reliance Industries Ltd’s Navi Mumbai SEZ in the last BoA meeting held in June. Approvals
An official release said that 39 applications for setting up SEZs, including eight proposals for conversion of in-principle to formal approvals, were before the board, out of which it granted 21 formal approvals and six in-principle ones. SEZs that got formal clearances include bio-tech SEZ by Parsvnath Developers Ltd in Andhra Pradesh, Hindalco Industries Ltd’s SEZ for aluminium and aluminium products in Orissa, Mangalore SEZ Ltd in Karnataka for petro-chemicals, and petroleum and leather SEZ by APIIC in Andhra Pradesh. Other formal approvals include electronic hardware and IT-ITeS SEZ by True Developers Private Ltd in Tamil Nadu, IT-ITeS SEZ by Unitech Infopark Ltd in Tamil Nadu, Engineering SEZ by SIPCOT in Tamil Nadu and a multi-product SEZ by H.N. Company in Nagaland spread over 400 hectares. Prominent in-principle approvals include bio-tech SEZ by Videocon Realty & Infrastructures Ltd in West Bengal, multi-product SEZ by Chhindwara Plus Developers Pvt Ltd in Madhya Pradesh spread over 2,000 hectares, automobiles-auto ancillary SEZ by SIPCOT in Tamil Nadu and a multi-product SEZ by Skil Infrastructure Ltd in Karnataka. Addressing the BoA members, the Chairman and Commerce Secretary, Mr G.K. Pillai, said that so far formal approvals have been granted for setting up of 341 SEZ, of which 130 have been notified. He said that over Rs 43,123 crore have been invested in these notified SEZs, which provide direct job to 35,053 people. Incidentally, the House Panel on functioning of SEZs has criticised the “undue haste” of SEZ clearances on July 7 and sought a freeze on further notifications.
