Foreign education Bill unlikely in monsoon session

Deepak Goel

New Delhi, July 12 The entry of overseas educational institutions in to the country has hit a road block. A source close to the development told Business Line that “there are a host of issues involved in allowing foreign insti tutions into the country and the Foreign Educational Institutions Bill is unlikely to be presented in the forthcoming session of the Parliament”. The Union Cabinet had given the Bill its go ahead in March paving the way for it to be presented in Parliament for approval.

At a meeting convened by the Ministry of Human Resource Development here on Thursday, a range of issues were deliberated upon such as fees that the overseas institutions can charge and equity structure to be allowed in such institutions.

In addition, concerns were expressed on the aspect of level playing field for foreign players and also the fate of home institutions as a result of foreign institutions.
