IT boom: Fall in civil services aspirants from South

G. Naga Sridhar

Hyderabad, Aug. 7 The craze for a career in civil services appears to have withstood the onslaught of information technology boom as the number of candidates taking the exam remained nearly constant in recent years.

In the South, however, there is some impact of new generation jobs on civil services, referred to as ‘steel frame’, according to experts.

“The number of candidates appearing for the examination has been consistent at 1.5 lakh. However, there has been a slight decline in candidates appearing for the examination from South India. On campus placements attract most of the students to private sector jobs,” Mr Gopala Krishna, Director of Braintree, a coaching institute here, told Business Line.

There has been no let up in the number of aspirants from northern region especially from States such as Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh led by New Delhi.

“The interest in civil services is still growing as a career in them has a larger social connotation. It gives the satisfaction of serving the people and nation,” Ms Anidita Mitra, All India topper among the women candidates, told Business Line from Chhattisgarh.

However, in some southern States, the IT and BPO boom has some impact on civil services aspirants.

“The IT and BPO companies are luring the youngsters through campus recruitments. The fact that the total number of candidates remained constant over the years despite increase in job-seekers shows that many were preferring other sectors such as IT,” Mr Gopala Krishna pointed out.

“The impact of IT on civil services aspirants can clearly be seen in Bangalore where many coaching institutes had to be closed due to lack of candidates,” Mr K. Guru Raj, a civil services trainer in Bangalore, said.

“There has been a 10 to 15 per cent fall in the number of candidates taking the exam from Karnataka in the last five years,” he added.
