Telecommunications Info-Tech - Outlook India is Nokia’s 2nd largest sales market

Our Bureau New Delhi, Aug. 23 World’s largest mobile phone maker Nokia today announced that India has become its second largest market in terms of sales, going past the US in the quarter ended June 2007. The company also announced that it has started exporting to 58 countries from its Sriperumbudur, Chennai manufacturing plant, which has reached production volumes of 60 million handsets. Almost 50 per cent of the locally manufactured mobile phones are being exported. “India is playing an increasingly important role in the global economy buoyed by impressive economic growth, skilled manpower and tremendous business opportunity. As the market leader in devices and infrastructure, Nokia is committed to building the telecom ecosystem in the country and fostering the creation of a favourable environment for collaboration and economic development,” said Mr Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, President and CEO of Nokia Corporation. He said that Nokia would ramp up its manpower, investment and manufacturing capabilities in India. The newly merged entity Nokia Siemens Networks has recently announced its plans to invest $100 million in India over the next three years. Mr Kallasvuo said that Nokia Siemens’ services business unit would be headquartered out of India. Nokia Siemens Networks announced that Mr Rajeev Suri, previously head of the Asia Pacific region of Nokia Siemens Networks, has been appointed to lead the services business unit.
