New terminal at Mangalore airport by Sept 2008 likely

Our Bureau

Mangalore, Nov. 9

Work on the new integrated terminal building at the Mangalore airport is likely to be completed by September 2008 , and the terminal building is expected to handle both domestic and international flights from January 2009.

Work on the Rs 147-crore integrated terminal building, which began in July this year, has recorded around 20 per cent completion in a span of four months. This is in spite of torrential rainfall in Mangalore in the last few months. Earth work and foundation for the terminal building have been completed.

Mr M.R. Vasudeva, Airport Director, Airports Authority of India (AAI), Mangalore, told presspersons here on Friday that new integrated terminal building will come up on an 18,200 sq metre of area. The new terminal building, which will reduce the distance between the airport and the city by eight km, can handle 500 passengers at a time.

He said that recently the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests has given its clearance for the new terminal building project at the airport.

The terminal building will have two aerobridges and 28 check-in counters.

Work completion

Work on the apron construction near the terminal building has achieved 30 per cent completion. Five aircraft can be parked at the new apron. Keeping future requirements in mind, land has been earmarked for extension of apron. If extended, the apron can handle total eight aircraft at a time.

Mr B. Janardhana Pujari, Rajya Sabha MP and member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Civil Aviation, who inspected the developmental works at the airport, said that he has written to the Finance Ministry seeking cargo handling facilities at the airport. He urged the State Government to speed up the work on infrastructure development near the airport.
