BL Research Bureau The strategic alliance between NIIT and US based NComputing holds potential for product synergy. As a part of the alliance, NComputing would provide virtual PC solutions to schools across India. Virtual PC allows multiple users to draw upon the resources of a single PC. The NComputing solution consists of virtualisation software that enables a single PC to be shared by many users. NComputing’s access devices and software supposedly allows as many as 30 users to access the capability of one PC. With just one CPU for all the systems, CPU costs for multiple systems can be done away with, thus bringing down overall costs of infrastructure and maintenance by an estimated 50 per cent. NComputing has also stated that the product could reduce electricity consumption by 95 per cent as its devices consume only one watt of power thus possibly eliminating the need for UPS systems. High cost of PCs is one of the reasons for low penetration of computers in the country. NIIT is among the top players in the computer and computer-aided education space in schools across the country. This partnership will enable the company to sell its own software products at a price that could well be an economical proposition for schools, thus providing it with a competitive edge. NIIT already caters to approximately 1.5 million students in 5000 schools – government and private. With government as well as private schools’ spending on bringing greater PC led education on the rise, NIIT may be well placed to corner a substantial market share.
