Cos finding it tough to handle data centres

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Dec. 14 Faced with shortage of professionals to man data centres, enterprises are looking at consolidating existing centres while exploring options to outsource some of their functions, according to security technology provider Symantec Corporation.

The Director of Enterprise Sales, Data Centre Standardisation, Asia Pacific and Japan, Symantec Corporation, Mr Sriram Iyer, said that the pace at which the data flow is growing, and demanding regulatory issues, companies are finding it increasingly difficult to handle change.

Focus on standardisation

Apart from the need to manage growing complexity of regulatory compliance related issues, and the need to manage data explosion, efforts are now trained on standardisation of data centre management, he said.

Mr Iyer told Business Line “data centres face intimidating and worsening set of challenges involving service level agreements, data growth, staffing challenges and increasing cost.”

Citing the Data Centre Report, which has gathered information from 800 data centres across the globe, Mr Iyer said that the findings reveal that on one side there is growing shortage of data centre professionals and on the other, managers are finding it hard to retain experts.

Research findings showed that Global 2000 enterprises are spending more than $6.6 billion annually to help manage data centre complexity. However, over 50 per cent of them are forced to manage with understaffed centres.

As part of streamlining the overall data centre functions, companies are heading towards server virtualisation and consolidation of assets to bring down overall long term costs.
