Natural language for precise search engines

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Jan. 7

Use of natural language interface will make search engines more precise in retrieving information, according to Dr Aravind Joshi, a US-based researcher in natural language processing technologies, computers and cognitive science.

Speaking to newspersons at the International Institute of Information Technology-Hyderabad here on Monday, ahead of the Third International Joint Conference of Natural Language Processing (NLP), Mr Joshi said the goal of natural language processing is to explore the extent to which one can automate the understanding of any language people speak. By doing so, the effort is to make computational programmes for the computer to read the text in any language.

Language Meet

Over 300 researchers in NLP are expected to take part in the five-day conference being organised by the Asian Federation of National Language processing (AFNLP) and IIIT-H.

Relating the importance of NLP in the Indian context, The IIIT-H Director, Dr Rajeev Sangal, said, “With being India home for about 23 recognised languages, we could harness the power of natural language processing , including speech recognition.”
