Trade across LoC likely by mid-July
K.R. Srivats
Attari (Wagah Border), Jan. 18 Trade across the Line of Control (LoC) is expected to commence by mid July this year, with India and Pakistan coming to a basic understanding on the list of items that could be traded across the LOC.
“On Kashmir, we have come to an understanding with Pakistan on nine items that could be traded across the LoC. Although India had suggested 14 items, we are satisfied with 9 items to start with as it covers about 85 per cent of what we wanted,” Mr Jairam Ramesh, Minister of State for Commerce, said.
The nine items include carpets, handicrafts, furniture, silk and silk products, fruits, aromatic plants, medicinal plants, spices and basmati rice.
Confidence building
A Commerce Ministry official said that the trade across LoC would happen for the first time ever and that this was part of the confidence building measures.
Mr Ramesh also said that the land customs station would be at Salamabad and Chakandabagh to enable trade across LoC.
In 2006-07 bilateral trade between India and Pakistan stood at $1.7 billion, doubling over bilateral trade of around $850 million in 2005-06.
