IT biggies snap up 33,000 professionals in Dec quarter

‘The hiring outlook is stable for the industry’

Moumita Bakshi Chatterjee

New Delhi, Jan. 20 The country’s largest IT companies have added close to 33,000 professionals combined, during the quarter ended December, with Infosys Technologies alone snapping up over 11,600 professionals on a gross basis.

Four of top five Indian IT exporters, which have declared their results for the October to December quarter — Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Wipro and HCL Technologies — have logged a combined gross hiring of over 32,800 professionals, while the net additions add up to over 16,800. Satyam Computer Services, the country’s fourth largest software exporter, will announce its Q3 results on January 21.

“Going forward, the hiring outlook is stable for the industry as we do not see dramatic change in business conditions. The hiring for the full industry is expected to be 4,50,000-4,70,000 people in FY09, against an estimated 4,30,000 this year,” the Infosys Technologies head HRD and education and research, Mr T.V. Mohandas Pai, told Business Line.

Lateral hires limited

Mr Pai, however, pointed out that the supply of lateral hires was limited and industry depends largely on freshers, who graduate once a year. “We need to re-look at the system of graduation in such a way that students can enter college system twice a year and graduate. This will help even-out the supply issues,” he said.

TCS, the largest IT employer in the country, also anticipates the hiring in FY09 to be almost at similar levels as this year, albeit with a slight easing of wage inflation. “This year we gave employees 14-15 per cent jump, against 12-15 per cent last year. Going forward, it is likely to be in 10-12 per cent range. However, we will have more clarity once we close the fiscal,” Mr S. Padmanabhan, Executive Director (HR) of TCS, said.

Mr D.K. Srivastava, HR head of HCL Technologies, expects a change in the mix of hiring in coming quarters. “The industry is looking at hiring BSc graduates in a big way and imparting extensive training to them,” he said.
