West Bengal ranks fifth among the 17 States taken into consideration with regard to attractiveness as an IT & ITES destination, according to a survey on the IT & ITES scenario in West Bengal conducted recently by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC).

Several policy measures have been suggested that may help improve efficiency in the IT & ITES sector in the State. Infrastructure, improvement in technical education standards and more fiscal incentives have been identified as key factors that will attract investment.

A majority of the respondents were not in favour of trade unions and the right to strike in sector, according to the survey.

The survey report, which was released on Monday, was based on feedback gathered from prominent IT companies operating in the State. According to ICC, the study has been carried out to access the actual growth and investment scenario in the IT & ITES sector in the State and to estimate the comparative advantages, strengths and relative weaknesses of West Bengal as a destination for these companies.

Most of the companies surveyed have bases outside West Bengal also and, as such, have first-hand knowledge of the operational and investment climate in other States, apart from West Bengal.

The survey states that given the economic potential, West Bengal can emerge as one of the most prominent investment zones in the near future. It adds that “robust future growth will definitely be propelled by service sectors like IT & ITES, among others”.

The report points out that “it is necessary that the State Government facilitates the sustainable growth of IT & ITES and ensures smooth functioning of the sector by taking the right steps and by actively implementing declared policies and procedures”.
