Convergence ‘Unified communication no longer a niche technology’ L.N. Revathy Coimbatore, March 13 Chained-to-the-desk mandates seem quaint with people preferring to work while on the move, prepared to stay connected at all times to avoid the risk of losing business and willing to carry the office around one’s palm. All this though would be possible only by unifying communication (to employees) seamlessly and in real time, Mr Vivek Porwal, BU Head (Unified Communications), Avaya GlobalConnect, told Business Line. Emphasising the importance of staying connected while on the move, he said: “It is no longer a niche technology, but an indispensable tool, particularly for sales and field service teams.” “Unified Communication (UC) is the buzzword. It pans out to unifying communication to employees, providing communication seamlessly and in real time. While different vendors have different connotations for UC, such as staying connected via e-mail (which may not be in real time), Avaya offers a solution which makes it easier for companies to integrate with the desktop or business applications they (the customer) prefer,” he said. IDC estimates show a steep growth in the UC market to $17.5 billion by 2011 from $4.8 billion in 2007. Sharing a recent study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Avaya, he said: “It showed that 92 per cent of professional services organisations perceived communications technology as the key to improved client satisfaction. Enterprises both big and small, and across verticals have begun to realise that mobility helps them cut costs, improve productivity and enhance efficiency by consistent connectivity.” Avaya introduced the Unified Access and Unified Messaging solutions almost a decade ago.
