Economist Intelligence Unit launches India operations

Our Bureau

New Delhi, March 27 The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), part of the London-based Economist Group, on Thursday announced the launch of its India operations to assist domestic companies in their overseas expansion and also provide better services to overseas companies with growth plans in India.

“India has emerged as one of the world’s most important markets. There is enormous potential for us in Indian market. With global economy slowing down, the 2008 performance of India may be disappointing, but the prospects are exceptionally bright for the next 20 years,” Mr Robin Bew, Editorial Director and Chief Economist of the EIU, told newspersons here.

On what had prompted EIU to establish presence here after more than 60 years of its existence, Mr Bew told Business Line that clients perception about India (from rest of the world) had changed significantly in the last decade and also that increasing number of Indian businesses were now going abroad for growth opportunities.

On the economic situation in the US and its impact on India, Mr Bew said that Indian market will be affected. Besides its regular product and service offerings like India-based research and conferences, plans are afoot to launch sometime next year a India-specific forecasting service.
