New Delhi, March 31 The franchise owner of DLF IPL’s Delhi team, GMR Sports, has signed up Akshay Kumar as ‘brand partner’ to fight the frenzy and media bias that a Shah Rukh Khan or Preity Zinta-led team might manage when the two teams meet.

In the Capital on Monday, the actor said his heart beats for Delhi. “I consider myself a pucca Dilliwallah. I would like to thank the GMR group for letting me become the first fan of Delhi Daredevils,” Akshay Kumar said.

According to Mr Yogesh Shetty, GMR Sports, CEO, Akshay Kumar’s personality matched the persona of team Delhi Daredevils. What could also work to Delhi Daredevils’ advantage is that the actor is also brand ambassador for Thumbs Up, the drink from Coca-Cola’s portfolio. Coca-Cola has signed up as an associate sponsor with the tournament broadcaster Sony for deal worth between Rs 16-20 crore.

“The GMR group is in the process of gifting Delhi a world-class airport. Now, with Delhi Daredevils, we want to make Delhi a world-class city for sports and take Indian sports to a new level,” added Mr Srinivas Bommidala, Chairman, GMR Sports, in a statement. Also present on the occasion were cricketers Shoaib Malik, Mohammed Asif and captain of the team Virender Sehwag. A Web site delhidaredevils.com was also launched. The Delhi team will play its first game at the Feroz Shah Kotla against team Jaipur on April 19.
