Agri-Biz & Commodities - Rubber
Campaign to focus on diseases of rubber trees

Our Correspondent

Kottayam, June 1 The ‘Intensive campaign 2008’ organised this year by the Rubber Board in association with Rubber Producers’ Societies (RPS) would concentrate on eradicating diseases affecting the rubber trees, including Corynespora leaf disease capable of destroying entire rubber plantations.

The national level campaign will be inaugurated by Mr Sajen Peter, Chairman of Rubber Board, at Kottayam on June 2.

The South American Leaf Blight has wiped out a major portion of rubber plantations from Brazil, the birth place of Hevea Brasiliensis.

Corynespora leaf disease is similarly a threat to the rubber plantations in India. Formerly, it affected only the plants in the nursery. But now it has attacked the major mature trees as well.

A few years ago Corynespora appeared in South Canara in Karnataka and now it has started appearing in many places in Kerala.

The awareness campaign, from June 2 to July 31, would enable the officers to meet the growers in person and convince them of the need for prompt action against the dreadful disease affecting the rubber trees.

The Rubber Board intends to meet 1 lakh growers through 4,000 campaign meetings in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Mr K.G. Mohanan, Joint Rubber Production Commissioner, would preside over the inaugural session. Mr K. Jacob Thomas, Vice-Chairman, and Mr Suresh Koshi, National Federation President of the RPSs, among others would speak.
