Ritu Raj Konwar

Diminishing species: A villager collecting seeds from a giant water lily commonly known as Makhana (Eueyale Ferox) in the Deepor Beel Bird Sanctuary on the eve of the World Environment Day celebration in Guwahati on Wednesday. Puffed seeds of the giant water lily are a delicacy in this region and villagers sell the seeds in the local markets by destroying the plants. This plant, once seen in all the wetlands of the North-East during this season, is seen only in few wetlands of the region due to the large-scale consumption of its seeds.
