Parliamentary panel hears industry on TRPs

Meera Mohanty

New Delhi, June 20 A Parliamentary committee is believed to have met various stakeholders, including regulatory authorities, advertising bodies, DTH operators and broadcasters, on the issue of television ratings. The two agencies, Television Audience Measurement (TAM) and aMap, that conduct such exercises, are also believed to have been heard by the committee during its day-long closed- door meeting here on Thursday. The committee is believed to have heard the views of the Indian Broadcast Foundation, Advertising Agencies Association of India and the Advertising Standards Council of India, senior industry leaders and analysts.

Advertisers, broadcasters, and broadcast platforms all bank on the rating points for commercial negotiations.

At the end of March, the TRAI had released a consultation paper on the need for policy guidelines for Television Rating Points (TRPs) and one of the key issues sought to be addressed was the need for the Government to regulate the system of TRPs. The TRAI, which has already received the stakeholders’ views, is yet to make its recommendations on the issue.
