Forest Rights Act to be enforced in AP

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, July 31 Andhra Pradesh could be one of the first States in the country to implement the Recognition of Forest Rights Act enacted by Government of India that came into force on December 31 last year.

Chief Minister Dr Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Thursday, asked the Tribal Welfare and Forest Department to hasten the survey, verification, mapping and identification of the land so that its ownership would be handed over to the genuine beneficiaries.

Officials informed him that the committees were in place and over 50,000 acres was cleared and another 50,000 acres would be ready in the next one week.

A release from the Chief Minister’s Office said that title deeds of these lands could be distributed on August 16 or 17 at Visakhapatnam followed by other districts.

The aim of the Act is to vest forest rights and occupation in the forest land for the Scheduled Tribes and other traditional forest dwellers who have been residing in such forests for generations but whose rights could not be recorded.
