Westerly system seen driving rains into north-west

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram, Sept 2 Monsoon has been active over interior Karnataka and south Maharashtra during the 24 hours ending Tuesday morning as an active rain belt over East India seemed to have moved south-southeast from flood-ravaged Bihar.

While the monsoon trough continued to stay close to the Himalayan foothills, the rains spread out over the north-east, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. This is slated to continue for another three days.

In the south, the persisting east-west shear zone of monsoon turbulence featured an embedded cyclonic circulation over north Tamil Nadu. Scattered to fairly widespread rain or thundershowers are likely along the west coast and over parts of the south peninsula during the next three days.

In the northwest, a western disturbance is forecast to canter in from across the border to bring widespread to fairly widespread rains to many parts of the region for three days from September 5.

WITHDRAWAL SCHEDULE

This would in effect delay the withdrawal of monsoon from Rajasthan, which normally starts from September 1. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had only on Monday said lower level wind pattern was not yet conducive for the process to get a start on.

Meanwhile, the European Centre for Medium-Term Weather Forecasting persisted with its forecasts for another busy spell for extreme south peninsula in a week’s time. This phase would see a weather system take shape off the Konkan-Mumbai coast.

The southeast coast too will see a similar system emerge, likely off the Andhra Pradesh coast. In this manner, a swathe of unsettled weather will stretch out over the peninsula. Coming at the fag end of the season, this is expected to prop up the rainfall figures, largely riding on the ‘base effect’.

The Met Centre, Chennai, said in an update that the 24 hours ending Tuesday morning saw rainfall occur at most places over North Interior Karnataka, at many places over coastal and south interior Karnataka, Lakshadweep, and at a few places over Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Rayalaseema. Isolated rainfall was reported from coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Among stations recording heavy rainfall (in cm) are: Penukonda-10; Thondebhavi and Gangavathi-9 each; and Gowribidanur, Bangalore, Holakere, Kadiri and Chilamattur-7 each.
