Trends States - Other States Sikkim taking banking to every household Sarikah Atreya Gangtok, Oct. 28 Sikkim Government has initiated preliminary steps to achieve “total financial inclusion” in the State, where each household will have bank access at its doorsteps with a health insurance cover. The scheme, for which the Rural Development Department is acting as the nodal agency, will also ensure efficient and timely-delivery mechanism of social benefit schemes. According to sources, the State Government is set to seek proposals from potential firms for the proposed Sikkim Universal Financial Inclusion Project, under which 70,000 to 100,000 households have been targeted for inclusion in the banking services network. Once the project is taken up, it is expected to be completed in four to five months. The main objective of the project is to provide access to banking services through IT-enabled bank savings accounts’ operations to all Sikkim households. The accounts opened would be “no-frills accounts” and the households would have access to banking services at their doorstep through a business correspondent designated by the bank according to Reserve Bank of India guidelines.
