New Delhi, Nov. 25 There is a 30-per cent vacancy among faculty positions in the Indian Institutes of Technology , Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, said, observing that good faculty was hard to come by due to issues relating to recruitment processes and salary structures.

Mr Ahluwalia was speaking at FICCI’s Higher Education Summit 2008. According to Dr Amit Mitra, FICCI Secretary-General, the reason for faculty shortage, “is lack of incentives, compensation and accountability that feeds into faculty promotion.”

Dr Narottam Puri, President-Medical Strategy, Fortis Healthcare, said faculty shortage could also be due to fewer students taking up research.
