Events Industry & Economy - Radio/TV I&B Ministry to meet TV broadcasters Our Bureau New Delhi, Dec. 9 The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is considering meeting television broadcasters over their coverage of the Mumbai attacks. The meeting could be held on Wednesday. The news coverage over those few days, including the airing of a telecon with terrorists, the minute-by-minute live coverage of operations and the haste with which relatives of victims were interviewed have all come under criticism. The National Security Guard has, according to media reports, called for restrictions on media coverage. Their operations were rendered vulnerable by the live coverage, according to reports. The Ministry, during the Mumbai episode, had issued an advisory to channels on November 27. This was followed by an advisory on December 3 asking news channels not to repeat footage of the attack. Notices had also been sent out to two individual channels. When contacted, channel heads and the spokesperson for the News Broadcasters Association declined comment. “We believe and have committed ourselves to self- regulation. Our self-regulation and code of conduct will work towards strengthening systems when crises like 26/11 occur in the future,” said a channel head who asked not to be quoted. NBA’s guideline requires its members to “refrain from allowing broadcasts that encourage secessionist groups and interests, or reveal information that endangers lives and national security.
