New Delhi, July 29

Taking exception to Karnataka Government's ban on iron ore exports, the Union Commerce Minister, Mr Anand Sharma, said a Group of Ministers, led by the Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, will decide on all mining sector issues.

“The Karnataka Government has permitted what should not have been for far too long including the disappearance of close to a million tonnes of seized iron ore. I think there are many questions there,” Mr Sharma told reporters on Thursday.

Indicating that State Governments cannot suo motu ban exports of any item, Mr Sharma said, “The Government will take a considered view on the matter…The GoM, which is meeting on Friday, is seized of the mining issues.”

On Monday, the Karnataka Government banned iron ore exports from the 10 minor ports in the State.
