Centre's assurance to fishworkers

Our Bureau

THE Centre has assured fishermen's representatives that it would work out a Rs 253-crore package for the `development' of the fisheries sector.

According to representatives of the National Fishworkers' Forum, a new `fisheries development scheme' would be formulated soon and would include, among other concessions, a package of diesel and kerosene subsidies for fishermen.

This decision is said to have been taken at a meeting between the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and representatives of the National Fishworkers' Forum held in Delhi on July 26.
