`Safe use of pesticide' project in 3 villages

Our Bureau

THE Indian Crop Protection Association (ICPA), Mumbai, in association with the Association of Pesticides Manufacturers of Andhra Pradesh has launched a "Safe use of pesticides project" at three villages — Vinjanampadu, Kattavaripalem and Kantapudi in Guntur districts. The project is intended to educate farmers on the judicious management of pesticides for getting higher yields, bringing down cost of inputs, preventing damage to the environment and for preserving soil fertility.

At a meeting held here to mark the formal launch of the project, Mr Pradip K. Mazumdar, Chairman of ICPA, said that according to estimates, nearly one-third of agricultural produce was lost to pests. It was necessary to arrest the loss and make agriculture sustainable, he said. To achieve this goal, integrated pest management practices would be popularised throughout the country, he added.

Sustainable agriculture was a constant source of employment to the rural poor and the project was aimed at inculcating the habit of safe use of pesticides and bringing about attitudinal changes in them.
