Shipping Industry & Economy - Industry Associations Plea to include Kochi port in specified list Our Bureau
KOCHI, June 16 THE Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the State Government to take up with the Union Government the inclusion of Kochi Port in the list of specified ports for export of ICD shipments. Expressing strong protest against the notification issued by the Central Board of Excise and Customs directing exporters to use specified ports for exports, the Chamber President, Mr Bharat N. Khona, said that the decision would be detrimental to the export trade of this region and also against the interest of the port. The State Government should take immediate steps to withdraw the notification for the benefit of the trade in the State, he added. As per the Customs notification, he said, exporters from this region would be denied of incentives under various Export Promotion Schemes if they export their cargoes through Kochi. While ports such as Chennai, Mumbai, Nava Sheva, Kandla and Kolkata were listed as eligible ports, the only major port in Kerala did not find a place in the notification. This discriminatory step, he said, would be a setback to the efforts being taken by the Kochi Port to step up export cargo traffic through the port. The notification would also turn to be an incentive for the diversion of cargo. It would result in increasing the cost of transportation thereby weakening the competitiveness of export products, he added.
