Gold output up 20 per cent

GOLD production in the country during fiscal 2003-04 stood at 10,198 kg as against a target of 8,274 kg. Production during the year marked a 20.7 per cent increase compared to 8,445.5 kg produced in 2002-03, according to an official release.

Out of this, Hutti Gold Mines Ltd produced 3,096 kg, Hindustan Copper Ltd (HCL) produced 195 kg and Hindustan Aluminium Company Ltd produced another 6,907 kg. After the closure of Bharat Gold Mines Ltd in 2001, Hutti is the only unit processing gold from the ore stage up to the final metal. Public sector company HCL and private sector Hindalco produce gold as a by-product while processing copper.
