, THE number of registered small-scale industrial units in the country went up from 13.75 lakh units in 2001-02 to 14.68 lakh units in 2002-03, according to the Third All India Census of Small-Scale Industrial Units.

Unregistered units too recorded a similar growth, from 91.46 to 95.42 lakh units.

SSI production at constant prices went up from Rs 1,95,613 crore to Rs 2,10,636 crore. Exports registered a much larger increase than production. While production went up by less than 8 per cent between 2001-02 and 2002-03, exports rose 20.7 per cent, from Rs 71,244 crore to Rs 86,013 crore.

The number of employed in the SSI sector went up from 249 lakh in 2001-02 to above 261 lakh in 2002-03.
