Cabinet nod for Bill to exempt N-E jute units from cess

New Delhi , June 23

THE Union Cabinet on Thursday approved a proposal to introduce a Bill in Parliament to amend the Jute Manufacturers' Cess Act 1983.

Once the Bill is enacted, the Centre would be empowered to exempt the goods produced or exported by the jute manufacturing units in the North-Eastern region from levy of cess for a specified period.

The exemption from cess would increase the viability of the jute mills in the North-Eastern region and help the economic development of the region, the Defence Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, told newspersons here after the Cabinet meeting.
