Poultry Japan urged to revoke ban on poultry products Vishwanath Kulkarni
Bangalore , Aug 28 After declaring that the country is free from avian flu, the Union Government has asked Japan to revoke the ban on imports of poultry products from India.
Tough market
Japan, one of the sophisticated and the toughest market to crack due to its quality standards, had granted access to Indian poultry products in the second half of 2005, but had imposed a ban later with the spread of the avian flu. Officials of the Agricultural and Processed Foods Products' Export Development Authority (Apeda) told Business Line that the Department of Animal Husbandry, has recently written to the Japanese Government for resuming poultry imports from India as it was free from "avian flu". "We are hopeful of re-entering the Japanese market soon," said Mr K.S.Money, Chairman, Apeda. Along with Japan, Apeda is planning to tap other markets such as Malaysia and Thailand for its poultry products, especially egg and egg products. "Negotiations are on with these countries for exploring the export opportunity," Mr Money said. The exports of Indian poultry products declined by 38 per cent to Rs 15.34 crore in April 2006 compared with Rs 26.66 crore in April 2005. For fiscal 2005-06, poultry exports registered a 16 per cent growth to Rs 326.36 crore compared with Rs 281.95 crore in 2004-05. Apeda's overall export basket grew by 12 per cent to Rs 19,379.22 crore in 2005-06 against Rs 17,300 crore in 2004-05. "We expect to sustain the growth momentum this year," he said. Industry sources estimate that India's share in the Japanese poultry market to be very small. Japan consumes about 2.2 million tonnes of poultry meat and meat products a year of which about 1.5 million tonnes is produced within the country. The rest about 0.7 to 0.9 million tonnes is mainly imported from Brazil, US, Chile and a small quantity from Philippines, China and Argentina.
