Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off Shutdown trouble
My Win NT 4.0 server is not shutting down. Whenever I go for "Shut down" or "Restart" or "Close all programs and logon as different user" stops responding for some time and an error box with the following title appears: "OLE ChannelWnd. This windows application cannot respond to the End task request. It may be busy, waiting for a response from you or it may have stopped executing" and three buttons appear... Press `wait', Press `endtask', Press `cancel'. Please suggest a solution. Anish Thomas The actual problem is that some service that is running at the background is not responding to the shutdown command and fails to stop the service, resulting in the End task dialog box appearing asking you whether you want to wait or end the process immediately. You will have to find out which service is causing such a problem and why. You can have a look at the event log for some hint and also there are several services that have the "interact with Desktop" option enabled. Most probably it would be one of these services that would have resulted in the problem. Please double click on the service icon in the control panel and double click on the services that are started and running. Note down the services that have the `interact with desktop' option enabled. Remove the check box for all of such services and check whether your shutdown problem has been solved. If it has been solved, then one of these services caused the problem. Now switch on the `interact with desktop' option for the services you have noted down one by one and identify the problem-causing service. Once the service is identified, you can leave the `interact with desktop' option unchecked for that service provided it does not cause any other side effects. Solution by G. Rajah
