DoT not to raise 5Mhz spectrum limit for 3G services

NEW DELHI: The Department of Telecom (DoT) is unlikely to address the concerns of prospective foreign players over the quantum of 3G spectrum although it has acknowledged that 5Mhz is not adequate to launch full suite of this high-end service.

A senior DoT official said though globally operators are given more spectrum for 3G, 5Mhz is enough in India as the usage here is different with subscribers, at least initially, preferring the standard 3G services such as high speed Internet and music do wnload besides voice.

The issue has been raised by the foreign players who are yet to come to India. Indian prospective 3G players however do not see this as a problem.

Globally, 3G services can enable an user to access services such as high-speed Internet, interactive gaming, and instant downloads of movies, video clips and music on their mobile phones.

The CEO of a mobile company which is gearing up to launch 3G services in 22 circles once it gets spectrum through bidding said that all 3G services is possible with this amount of spectrum except video downloads.

An industry expert said, in the proposed spectrum limit though the number of subscribers could be limited but there won't be any effect on the service start or its quality. - PTI
