Management Columns - Leader Speak What you make happen matters
MR RAJESH RELAN, Managing Director, MetLife India. The best results come not from what you let happen but from what you MAKE happen. In today's corporate environment, cutthroat competition is something that every enterprise has to deal with, irrespective of vertical and region. The consumer rules the market today, and it is a challenge to keep up with the constantly changing needs of consumers, let alone innovating on your own offerings to meet these new needs. So, today's managers must lead the organisation to meet business goals while also keeping employees challenged at the workplace and help them grow. Growth in any organisation comes from knowledge and knowledge is seldom created in isolation. A few `Leadership secrets' can help managers motivate people to perform their best and achieve what the organisation collectively sets out to do - and become effective leaders in the end. First things first. Create an appropriate structure within the organisation and then find the right fit of people. A sureshot way for driving growth. Always remember, that there are no co-incidences, only planned chances. Give your subordinates a framework to work in and allow the freedom and flexibility to innovate. Recognise and appreciate performance a person's ability to do something increases with the appreciation of it. Timely rewards, both tangible (spot awards, gifts, monetary incentives etc) and intangible (words of appreciation, encouraging mail etc) will go a long way in boosting the morale of your subordinates and motivate them to perform better. Never make a decision based on just part of the story and you will earn the respect of your employees, even if the resulting decision isn't in their favour. If the situation demands it, get down with the employees and pitch in. The ability to set meaningful goals will help steer your employees towards the objective you are trying to reach. Realistic goals, with the appropriate tools to reach them, will make everyone feel a part of the organisation's success. As in insurance, leadership is all about planning for the future, while taking on the `ifs' and `buts' of today.
