Bihar School of Yoga, Munger, trains sannyasins and yoga teachers. One of its popular publications is The Effects of Yoga on Hypertension, by Dr Swami Shankardevananda. What is hypertension? It is excessive tension caused by increased blood pressure resulting from the damming up of blood behind constricted arterioles, explains the author. "Hypertension is not a disease in itself, but a sign that there are underlying problems in the management of the internal environment and mental levels." Won't drugs help? No, they can interfere with natural body rhythms, cautions Shankardevananda. "They also disturb sleep patterns, shutting off the dreaming phase responsible for releasing stresses." With the help of neat illustrations, the book guides one through the many yogic practices. Every yogic practice is based on two simple things, viz. relaxation and awareness, points out the author. "The relaxed mind is an alert mind, ever ready to deal with the problem of hypertension." Recommended for a relaxed reading.
Curd rice and drowsiness
My mother insists that I eat curd rice daily. But I'm averse to the idea because it tends to make me sleepy when studying. Now, who is right? Shyam G, Hyderabad Here is the answer from Dr W. Selvamurthy, Chief Controller, R&D, DRDO Life Sciences, and Deepa Prakash, CEO, Nutreplanet, Bangalore: Curd rice is very healthy food option. The lactic acid bacteria in curd promotes the health and well-being of your digestive system. However, the food we eat affects our neurotransmission. Curd rice is rich in starch and an amino acid called tryptophan. This promotes activities of neurotransmittors melatonin and seratonin, which in turn makes you drowsy and promotes good, deep sleep. However, if you are keen on keeping awake and alert at night to study, eating protein-rich food will help. Proteins are rich in amino acid tyrosine, which in turn stimulates the bio-chemical catecolamines, which helps make a person alert. A good way to stay awake would be to eat a cup of green gram sprouts with raw veggies at night along with dinner and have less curd rice. Send in your health queries to BillOfHealth@gmail.com.
