My company...my life?
Samprada Singh
I believe that the very thought of selling a company is a Western phenomenon. It differs from the basic Indian philosophy of creating and nurturing a business passed down by earlier generations. Hence, my beliefs are founded on the premise that businesses are not created to be merely sold for financial gains.
Alkem Laboratories is the culmination of a strong desire to reach out to the ailing. My brother BN Singh and I founded the company with the sole objective of providing our countrymen with high-quality affordable medicines.
In retrospect, this was also a response to our zeal and drive to generate tremendous value and create wealth. With each milestone, our priorities too evolved. It gives me great pride and pleasure that the initial philosophy of our business continues to hold the same significance for us even today, with over 4,000 people working towards a common goal.
Evidently, throughout my extensive career, the focus has never been solely on profitability. I am 80 years young and I am here in office everyday.
Greater issues, including being a mentor to Alkem, devising global growth strategies, and strengthening the Alkem brand and our commitment to employees, business associates and stakeholders continue to be of primary importance that I oversee very closely.
Although we are promoters, we see ourselves as salaried professionals bringing in objectivity and also earn dividends as shareholders. Competition has always spurred us to perform better. As in the past, we will continue to align our growth strategies to business imperatives to address competition domestically and internationally.
Where then is the question of selling the company? The promoters' confidence in the company's growth potential and their commitment to establish it as a global industry leader, are I believe, the key to developing great Indian MNCs spawned to create greater value in its own country and not merely to be sold on the pretext of `next level growth' or `global business expansion.'
As an entrepreneur, I will always want Alkem to grow competitively on an independent basis, considering its successful journey from humble beginnings to among the top 10 in the Indian pharma industry.
