April-Nov steel output up 5.4%

NEW DELHI, Dec. 12

THE total production of finished steel in the country during April-November 2002 has been provisionally estimated at 20.84 million tonnes as against 19.78 million tonnes during the same period last year, showing an increase of 5.4 per cent.

The total production of pig iron during this period was 3.17 million tonnes as against 2.54 million tonnes during the previous corresponding period, showing an increase of 24.5 per cent. The export of 23.3 lakh tonnes of steel during these eight months has also shown a growth of 15.8 per cent.

The apparent consumption of finished steel went up by 4.7 per cent and consumption of pig iron by 24.4 per cent compared to the same period last year.
