Ethanol-blended petrol launched across Karnataka

Bangalore , Oct. 1

KARNATAKA has become the first State in the South to launch ethanol-blended petrol across the State.

The recent launch of supply of 5 per cent ethanol mixed fuel from the Devanagonthi Oil Industry Terminal complex has ensured the supply of blended fuel across the State, making it the first in south India, said a press release from Indian Oil Corporation.

Ethanol-blended petrol was launched in the State in May this year and was being sold in 20 of the 27 districts. The latest launch of supply from Devanagonthi covers the remaining districts. The supply of ethanol-blended petrol across 20 districts of the State since May has generated earnings to the tune of Rs 2 crore to the sugar industry, the release said.

Ethanol, extracted from molasses, is a renewable source of energy. Blending of ethanol with petrol enhances the burning properties of the fuel, leading to lower carbon monoxide emissions in automobiles.
