Railways Konkan Railway unveils Sky Bus Metro model Our Bureau
Mumbai Oct. 13 IN a major breakthrough in transportation technology, the State-owned Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd has come out with a modern prototype of an operational `Sky Bus Metro' mode of transportation, which promises to add a new dimension to the growing Indian logistics market. After announcing its novel cost-effective eco-friendly Sky Bus Metro technology more than two years ago, the Konkan Railway has constructed a full-scale prototype of an operational Sky Bus Metro in Madgaon in Goa. According to Mr B. Rajaram, Managing Director of Konkan Railways Corporation, the capital cost of Sky Bus technology mode of transportation was Rs 50 crore per km, as against Rs 120 crore for elevated metro mode of transportation. Konkan Railway has given the proposal of Sky Bus Metro to a number of cities and metros in the country and abroad, however, it is only Goa and Kerala, which have given cabinet approval to the project. Talking to presspersons, Mr Rajaram expressed the confidence that the project will soon take off in one of these States, especially as internationally renowned certifying agency, TUV InterTraffic Gmbh of Germany consented to certify the safety of this technology. Mr Rajaram informed that the financial position of the corporation was improving considerably, with its revenue increasing from Rs 98 crore in 1998-99 to Rs 228 crore last fiscal. Replying to a question on running of high-speed train on its route at 150 kmph, he said the corporation had conducted trials successfully in December last year.
