Ex-Perfetti's chief Dhingra to join SABMiller

Ratna Bhushan

New Delhi , Dec. 26

ENDING weeks of speculation, confectionery major Perfetti Van Melle's Director, Mr A.K. Dhingra, is set to join beer major, SABMiller, as Director, Operations, South.

When contacted by Business Line, Mr Dhingra confirmed the development. "Yes, I have taken up this assignment at SABMiller, and will join them early next month," he said. He will be based in Bangalore.

Mr Dhingra's sudden exit from Perfetti Van Melle, announced last month, had taken industry players by surprise, and led to widespread speculation about his next move, including the buzz that he was headed for Britannia Industries. He had, meanwhile, all along maintained, that he was taking a `sabbatical' after putting in his papers at Perfetti.

Mr Dhingra put in 10 years at Perfetti Van Melle, prior to which he was with Hindustan Lever for 22 years. The Rs 400-crore Perfetti — wholly owned Indian subsidiary of the privately-held Perfetti Van Melle S.p.A — is now a leading player in the domestic confectionery industry, and industry players, including business rivals, acknowledge Mr Dhingra's contribution in spurring industry growth.

In May this year, SABMiller, the world's second largest brewer, had picked up 50 per cent stake and management control of the brewing business of Shaw Wallace & Co Ltd for $132.8 million.
