SEWA to open shops to help workers in SAARC nations

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Jan. 22

IN order to provide window of opportunity for the women labourers of the SAARC countries, the self-help voluntary body Self Employed Women Association (SEWA) has decided to open up shops dealing with handicrafts and works of the women workers.

At a round-table for regional consultation organised by SEWA Trade Facilitation Centre in association with the Global Institute of Convergence Studies here, the SEWA founder, Ms Elaben Bhatt, highlighted the inefficiencies of previous consultations on global opportunities and underscored the need to provide concrete solutions about how to benefit from globalisation.

Among the hurdles in the way of improvement of the women grass root producers she mentioned ignorance of market trends, lack of information, flow about global market opportunities, unhygienic work milieu, lack of integrated effort and technological know-how.

It is to fill this gap that the SEWA has proposed to go global by opening shops dealing with handicrafts and works of women labourers of the SAARC countries in order to facilitate the marketing services, direct marketing linkages and market information for these women.

Mr S.B. Mohapatra, Secretary, Textiles, while highlighting the success of Lijjat papad, explained that other grass root producers have not been able to replicate their marketing strategies.

He said there could be a two-fold solution to this and the first is to link with training and export organisations and second is to organise self-help groups and foster marketing networks such as SEWA has done.
