Coimbatore , April 5

TO bridge the gap in industry-academia interaction, Elgi Software and Technologies Ltd (eSTEL) and PSG College of Technology (PSGCT) have joined hands in establishing a `centre for advanced applied technology' at the latter's campus.

The Chairman of the Rs 500-crore Sara Elgi group, Mr L.G. Ramamurthi, said that the centre was in line with the company's business focus of designing, developing and marketing embedded technologies for the `convergence' space. Mr T. Shanmugam, Chief Technology Officer, Elgi Software, said the company had already created a range of convergent devices that would be introduced in the market place very soon.

Both the entities have also agreed to jointly develop e-curriculum. Elgi Software will deploy its advanced e-learning solution for converting the entire engineering course content using multimedia as a multi-channel communication method to explain hard-to-teach concepts. `We are not planning to digitise the curriculum, but are attempting to make the classroom a better place for learning and understanding the concepts,' Mr Dinesh Shyamsundar, Chief Operating Officer, Elgi Software, said.

The CEO of PSG Institutions Mr C.R. Swaminathan, said that the proposed project would be completed within the next 18 to 24 months.

He said that the curriculum for all of the 13 branches of engineering course that PSGCT offered would be in e-format in another two years.

`The key to a successful e-learning exercise is in providing rich content. The CAD/CAM, for instance has become a part of elearning. We cannot get rid of teachers. Even they are trained to handle classes using these tools,' he clarified.
