New Delhi , April 22

THE Indian Steel Alliance (ISA), representing the primary steel manufacturers, on Thursday said that production of benchmark HR steel by ISA member companies increased by 1.08 million tonnes (mt) amounting to 13.15 m.t. during 2003-04 from 12.07 m.t. during 2002-03.

Exports grew by 2 per cent, amounting to 2.89 mt compared to 2.82 mt last year. Domestic sales went up by 10 per cent to 10.29 m.t. (9.34 mt).

Commenting on the growth in production, Mr Moosa Raza, President, ISA, said, "It's time we separated facts from fiction. Share of exports as a percentage to total sales was down to 13 per cent in 2003-04 from 14 per cent in 2002-03. Exports have grown only by 2 per cent during 2003-04 compared to 62 per cent in 2002-03.''

According to Mr Raza, allegations by various user groups regarding ISA member companies resorting to exports and creating artificial lack of supply in the domestic market are baseless. Domestic industry had always been a priority for us and ISA had never exported at the cost of the domestic industry, he said.
