Sports has given me so much, particularly after the Cricket World Cup, I am looking forward to giving something back by getting involved with sporting events: Mandira Bedi

Mumbai , May 12

CELEBRITY golf in Mumbai will be hitching onto the Mandira Bedi bandwagon with the McDowells Signature Celebrity Golf 2004, on June 6 at the US Club golf course. The event is being held to raise funds for CHAMPS (Caring, Helping, Assisting, Motivating, Promoting Sportspersons) Foundation, launched by Sunil Gavaskar, in 1999, to provide financial assistance for needy Indian sportspersons.

Mandira Bedi will be one of the eager amateur participants, teeing off with golf achievers like Shruti Khanna and Digvijay Singh.

"Sports has given me so much, particularly after the Cricket World Cup, I am looking forward to giving something back by getting involved with sporting events," said the television personality, at a media briefing on Wednesday.

Shruti, one of the `real' celebrities in the Signature event on the strength of achievements in competitive tournaments, touched on the sport's tendency to surprise players. "The winner's trophy was won last year by filmstar Madhavan, from under the nose of several renowned golfers including me, so anyone has a chance."

The two wore the official tournament attire, sponsored by DAKS London, and tried their hand at putting, with Shruti passing on a few expert tips to Mandira, whose humility in the company of sports achievers, be they Indian women cricketers or golfers, is refreshing. "Shruti is the real celebrity and I hope she agrees to partner me in the putting competition," said Mandira.

The Indian corporate world will be represented by Mr Neeraj Roy of hungama.com, Mr Romesh Sobti of ABN Amro, Mr Bob Hoekstra of Philips, Mr Sanjay Sharma of Swarovski, and Mr Sanjay Krishnamurthy of BPCL, according to Rediffusion DYR.
