Chennai , June 28

IMAGE Infotainment Ltd, a digital media company, has set up Image College of Arts, Animation & Technology to train students in visual effects and game development.

Starting July, Image College of Arts will offer year-long postgraduate diploma courses in 3D animation, visual effects and game development.

At a press conference here today, Mr V. Natarajan, Chief Academic Officer, said that the institution would fill a long felt need for providing formal education in visual effects for the entertainment industry. Apart from information technology aspects, the courses would coach students in the traditional aspects of film making such as directing and script writing to enable them to get the whole picture of what visual effects is all about.

The courses would include over 1,450 hours of training to 30 students in a session. The college plans to run two sessions simultaneously. The details of the syllabus are available on the Internet at www.icat.ac.in.

Mr N. Madhusudhanan, a visual effects producer, who has worked on Indian and Hollywood films, said that India could emerge as the outsourcing hub for visual effects.

But formally trained people were needed, and institutions such as the Image College of Arts, Animation & Technology were key to tapping the potential.

The focus of training should not be on software alone but also the gamut of filmmaking, animation and visual effects.

Also, if training in project management was available, "we can beat them at their game," he said.
