Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Minister for Water Resources, Mr Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, has directed the Ground Water Department to sink another 100 tubewells to reach drinking water to villages without protected water supply schemes.
Announcing this to officials at a meeting convened here to review the functioning of the department, the Minister asked them to target 25 villages for sinking the wells using funds available under the Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Supply Scheme. Electric pump sets also would be installed at these places.
The conference decided to carry out these works with public participation. A public committee would be set up to oversee each programme. The Minister directed officials to complete work on the upkeep of 2,729 tubewells that are operated using hand pumps and also to ensure their continued functioning. The department should ensure that the full benefits of the scheme for digging wells reached the farmers.
