Mangalore , Oct. 27

THERE is potential for the growth of health and information technology (IT) sectors, which are softer on environmental issues, in Dakshina Kannada district, according to the Deputy Commissioner of the district, Mr Aravinda Srivastav.

He was addressing the members of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in Mangalore on Monday evening.

He also said that large local market is available for the development of tourism. The district administration is planning to develop Panambur beach without establishing any permanent structures there. The guidelines of the coastal regulation zone will be adhered to while developing the beach. Work on beach development is likely to be completed by January 26, he said.

On infrastructure-related issues, Mr Srivastav said the administration is trying to sort out problems in the Bajpe airport expansion. There are plans to set up a weighbridge at Shiradi ghat on the Hassan-Mangalore highway. This will help regulate the movement of overloaded lorries on this stretch.

Mr Srivastav expressed concern over the instances of malaria in Mangalore.
